Avocados are nutrient dense foods with lots of healthy fats. They make a great replacement for the dairy products in homemade salad dressings. Just like in this green goddess dressing, the avocado ensures that it will still be rich and smooth, but made with only whole food ingredients.

This dressing recipe is quick and easy to make and will store for several days. It’s ready in just five minutes.

It makes a great dipping sauce, salad dressing or creamy topping. This recipe is also easily dairy-free and gluten-free, making it vegan-friendly as well.

What is in Avocado Green Goddess dressing?

Green Goddess dressing is typically made with a base of sour cream and mayonnaise. I’ve updated this dressing with lots of healthy fats found in avocado. And avocado keeps it just as creamy and smooth as the sour cream though.

Many recipes also use anchovy paste for a salty rich flavor. Instead, I use two different kinds of salt to bring out the natural flavors of the ingredients. The apple cider vinegar adds just enough acid for a slightly tart taste in a way that is vegetarian and vegan friendly.

The ingredients for this dressing are:

  • Avocado
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Mayonnaise (this is optional. If you are vegan or are eating egg and dairy free, just leave it out!)
  • Olive oil
  • Salt
  • Season salt
  • Parsley

With these ingredients you end up with a creamy concoction that tastes great on just about anything. The avocado really shines. But you can get creative and add other flavors as well. Play with some of these ingredients:

  • Jalapenos for spicy dip
  • Garlic
  • Basil
  • Lemon or lime juice
  • Chopped walnuts
  • Coriander
  • Chives

Ingredients for the dressing and how to blend it in a food processor

How do you make Avocado Green Goddess dressing?

I use a high speed blender or food processor to make the dressing. This is the best way to ensure that it is completely smooth and blended.

After blending the ingredients, test it for consistency and flavor. You can add more water to thin it out if you prefer. You can also adjust the flavor by adding more salt. If you want to add any other ingredients for flavor, do it at this time.

Add the parsley with any other spices and blend it again until it is finely chopped and smooth.

How do you use homemade dressing?

For homemade green goddess dressing, of course we think about putting it on salads. Luckily, there is so much more we can do with this amazing creamy dressing:

  • Quinoa
  • Hummus bowls
  • Breakfast hash
  • On burgers (especially salmon burgers!)
  • Baked fish
  • Crudites plate
  • Wraps
  • As a kid’s dip for chicken fingers or veggie sticks

It’s so versatile. It’s a great substitute for Ranch if you are cutting back on or avoiding dairy. And it’s just as appealing to kids as other creamy dipping sauces.

Storing this Dressing

This dressing can be stored in the refrigerator for up to three days.

Homemade vinaigrette can be stored much longer, but avocado starts to turn brown after a few days. This is best if used quickly or after a short refrigeration period.

Just finished making it – although I didn’t have any parsley it is still awesome. I just made some mayo so whatever bits I couldn’t clean out of the blender went into the dressing. Thanks very much for posting this recipe. 😎
