Are smoothies good for you?

The health factor of smoothies is completely dependent on what you put in them. This chocolate peanut butter smoothie sounds indulgent, but it’s full of ingredients that are healthy.

We stick with simple, whole ingredients in our chunky monkey smoothies:

  • Almond milk
  • Banana
  • Peanut butter
  • Cocoa powder
  • Dates

This short ingredient list means the smoothie is gluten free, dairy free, egg free and soy free. The addition of peanut butter means its a great source of protein that is vegetarian and vegan friendly. If you need to also make it nut free, you can use coconut milk and sun butter instead.

What are the healthiest things to put in a smoothie?

This chunky monkey smoothie will satisfy your sweet tooth with natural whole food ingredients. You can always customize your smoothie to meet your nutritional goals. Great things to add to smoothies are:

  • Dark leafy greens (like spinach and kale- their flavors are mostly masked by the sweet ingredients)
  • Protein powder (choose one that is unflavored and not sweetened)
  • Nuts and seeds (this would include other nut or seed butters)
  • Berries
  • Chia or flax seeds

How do you make a chocolate peanut butter banana smoothie thicker?

Smoothies are intended to be thick and creamy. There are a few tricks to achieving this texture to keep in mind when you are making your smoothie.

  1. Use a frozen banana
  2. Put the solid ingredients in the blender first then slowly add the almond milk in a stream. Only add what you need to make it smooth, not thin.
  3. Use a high powered blender that can chop up the frozen ingredients well.
  4. The more ice you add, the thicker it will be.
  5. If you don’t like the banana flavor, avocado is a good replacement that will not thin out the chocolate peanut butter smoothie.

How do you sweeten the chocolate peanut butter banana smoothie?

Both the banana and the dates are natural ingredients that sweeten the chocolate peanut butter banana smoothie.

The riper the banana is, the sweeter it will be. Overripe bananas will also blend better. Bananas bring sweetness to your smoothie, but also have lots of potassium, fiber and vitamin C. It’s easy to keep a few ripe bananas in the freezer to both sweeten and thicken your smoothie.

When bananas start getting a little too ripe on the counter, just peel them and toss them into a bag in the freezer. You’ll have frozen bananas ready to use any time.

Using dates as a natural sweetener is a great way to cut refined sugar from your diet. They are very mild in flavor, so you’ll still taste the chocolate and peanut butter in the smoothie. Besides being sweet, they have fiber, magnesium and calcium. If you want, you can soak the dates first for an extra smooth finish. One or two dates is plenty to sweeten a chocolate peanut butter smoothie.

Best smoothie ever!!! I made it with so delicious coconut milk and completely enjoyed it.!! Thank you for this awesome recipe Erin

  2. Does anyone know what the nutritional breakdown of this smoothie is? As a diabetic I know I can only have half a banana so should probably halve the other ingredients too. Peanut butter and almond milk are fine. Trying to find gluten free low glycemic foods I can eat for breakfast. Cereals have a high glycemic index, eggs in moderation are ok, gluten free bread sometimes gives me a little spike too. Not a big meat eater per personal preference so no bacon, ham, sausage etc. so hoping this smoothie will work. Thanks!
