Why I love this recipe

  • Great for picky eaters – This creamy, fruity smoothie makes a great breakfast or afternoon snack for kids. They don’t even know the spinach is there, and it’s the perfect way to use up leftover greens or fruit!
  • Packed with nutrients – Fresh fruit loses nutrients after it is picked, but frozen fruit has tons of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants locked in. The healthy greens in this smoothie also pack a nutritious punch!
  • Easy to customize – There are tons of ways to customize this classic strawberry banana smoothie. You can add coconut water, chia seeds, protein powder, or even more hidden veggies (like frozen cauliflower.)

  • Orange juice: A little bit of orange juice takes this simple smoothie to the next level of flavor! It adds sweetness and a bright citrus flavor that makes the strawberries stand out.
  • Banana: I like to peel and slice ripe bananas, then bag them and put them in the freezer. This makes it easy to throw them into a smoothie when needed!
  • Strawberries: Frozen strawberries work great for this delicious smoothie. They’re affordable and nutritious! (You can also freeze your own fresh strawberries or other fresh fruit.)
  • Spinach: Use a cup of spinach leaves to add nutrients to this strawberry spinach smoothie.
  • Yogurt: I like to use fat-free plain yogurt for this tasty smoothie. You can use Greek yogurt, regular yogurt, or even kefir. Anything to add creaminess!

Smoothie Mix-Ins

Sometimes I like to switch it up with my healthy smoothie recipes! I love that it can be easily altered depending on what I’m in the mood for or what I have on hand.

Here are some ideas on how to customize your strawberry banana spinach smoothie recipe:

  • Add chia seeds or hemp seeds
  • Add vanilla protein powder
  • Substitute kale, Swiss chard, romaine, or other leafy greens for fresh spinach
  • Use your favored flavored fat free yogurt, rather than plain
  • Add honey or apple juice for natural sweetness
  • Add extra veggies, like frozen cauliflower rice
  • Add nut butter (peanut butter, almond butter, or cashew butter are some of my favorites)
  • Use almond milk, oat milk, or cashew milk instead of yogurt

Storage Instructions

To store: This smoothie is best enjoyed right after making. You can store it in the fridge if you’re not able to finish it right away, but I don’t recommend trying to freeze it. (The texture will be off.)

To make ahead: If you want to save time, you can portion out the frozen fruit, spinach, and other smoothie mix-ins and keep it in the freezer. Then just add the orange juice and creamy mix-in when you’re ready to blend this strawberry banana spinach smoothie.

Recipe Tips

  • Substitute greens: Feel free to substitute baby spinach for kale in this strawberry banana smoothie recipe. If I’m using kale, I don’t pack the measuring cup as full. I usually add 1-2 loose handfuls.
  • Make it thick or thin: You may want to thin the smoothie with up to 1/2 cup juice/water to the consistency you like.
  • Use sliced, frozen bananas: I cut bananas into slices before freezing them so they blend well and create a nice, creamy texture.

I added coconut juice instead of orange juice and low fat yogurt. Absolutely tasty and has set me off for the morning.
