I’m always looking for new green smoothie inspiration! Smoothies are always one of my go-to’s for a quick healthy breakfast or afternoon pick-me-up. This smoothie is creamy and citrusy with a hint of tart. Once I have a delicious smoothie base I add all kinds of things to my smoothies depending on what I’m feeling like that day.
Here are some of my usual smoothie mix-ins:
2-3 Brazil nuts – Did you know just 1-2 Brazil nuts contain the total daily requirement for selenium? Brazil nuts are also rich in zinc. Both selenium and zinc boost your immune system, which everyone needs this time of year! Selenium is also wonderful for thyroid health. I usually buy a bag of Brazil nuts at Trader Joe’s and toss a few in my smoothies. You won’t even know they’re there!
Great Lakes Gelatin(the green kind dissolves in smoothies!) – Among many benefits, gelatin is soothing for the digestive system and is a great source of amino acids. When I’m not eating anything else for breakfast, I usually add a 2-3 tablespoons gelatin for protein to make it a little more substantial.
Coconut Milk Kefir – I’ve gotten back in the habit of making homemade coconut milk kefir. I usually make enough smoothie for my husband and son before they head out the door. I love knowing that they are getting some good probiotics as well as myself! Lately I’ve been making the kefir with 2 cups homemade almond milk and 1 can of coconut milk. I like the consistency a little better than with all coconut milk. I use the brand Body Ecology kefir starter that I buy at my local health food store.
Chia Seeds/Flax Seeds – We all know these superfoods are good! They are full of fiber, omega-3s, and antioxidants. I like to add a tablespoon or so.
Nordic Naturals Liquid Omega-3 – I especially like putting some of this supplement in my 4-year-old’s smoothie to give him an extra boost of omega-3’s. Omega-3s are important for so many things from brain development, mood, immunity, etc.
A few years ago I did a Green Smoothie Week on my blog. If you’re looking for more green smoothie ideas, here is the list from that week!
Green Smoothie Week:
Day 1 – Mixed Berry Mango Kale Smoothie
Day 3 – Mango Avocado Smoothie
Day 5 – Cherry Almond Spinach Smoothie

- 1 whole, peeled orange + the juice of another (or 1/2 cup orange juice)
- 3/4 cup coconut milk (any kind will work)
- 2-3 Tbsp fresh lime juice, about 2 limes
- 2 big handfuls power greens (I use a mix of spinach and kale)
