This M&M popcorn is guaranteed to make your taste buds do a happy dance! It’s sweet, it’s salty, it’s crispy and crunchy. It combines two of America’s favorite snacks into one delicious popcorn treat. It’s really hard to go wrong!

The chocolate candies and their crisp candy coating are the perfect balance to the light fluffy popcorn. Trust me — it’s hard not to eat the whole batch in one sitting!

If you’re looking for a fun alternative to traditional kettle corn or caramel popcorn, mini m&m popcorn is it!

This is one of my favorite treats for family movie night, summer parties, birthdays, and so much more. I like to use m&m’s minis to create a nice ratio of popcorn to chocolate. But you could use chopped regular M&Ms, or a combination of both!

You could even use seasonal M&Ms to give this special treat as a gift during the holidays: red & green M&Ms for Christmas, orange and brown M&M’s for Halloween, etc!

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

Ingredients You’ll Need

Here’s what you’ll need to make this M&M popcorn.

Ingredients for M&M popcorn on a countertop
  • Chocolate chips: I like to use semi-sweet chocolate chips for the chocolate drizzle, since you’ll be getting plenty of sweetness from the M&Ms. But you could also use dark chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, or milk chocolate chips.
  • Popcorn kernels: Any popcorn kernels will work for this recipe. You can pop them in an air popper, if you have one. Otherwise, use a pot over the stove!
  • M&Ms: Mini m&m candies work best for this recipe. But if you can’t find them, you can buy regular M&Ms and chop them up before adding to the popcorn. Check out this article on are m&ms gluten-free. You also might like these gluten-free m&m cookies.
  • Salt: I like to use kosher salt for this M&M popcorn. It has the perfect amount of saltiness and adds a bit of crunchy texture to the popcorn.

How to Make M&M Popcorn

Popcorn in a pot
  • (Optional) If you have an air popper, use the kernels and pop according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • If you don’t have an air popper, heat a large nonstick pot over medium heat. When the pot is warm, add the kernels and cover with a tight-fitting lid. Carefully shake the pot occasionally until the kernels begin to pop– this will help prevent them from burning.
  • Then continue shaking the pot until popping is about 5 seconds apart. Remove the popcorn from the heat and pour it onto a rimmed sheet pan.
Melted chocolate chips in a bowl
  • Place the chocolate chips into a microwave-safe bowl and heat for 30-second intervals, stirring between each one, until the chocolate is melted and smooth.
Melted chocolate drizzled over popcorn on a baking sheet
  • Drizzle the chocolate evenly over the popcorn and sprinkle with kosher salt.

FAQs

Is it normal to put M&Ms in popcorn?

M&Ms and popcorn are a great pairing. The sweet chocolate and slightly crunchy shell complement the fluffy, salty popcorn. You can also add a drizzle of melted semi-sweet chocolate to make M&M popcorn even more delicious!

How do you melt M&Ms for dipping?

You can melt M&Ms by placing them in a microwave-safe bowl and microwaving them for about 30 seconds. Then remove from the microwave and stir. Just keep in mind — the texture won’t be completely smooth, since M&Ms have a confectionery coating that doesn’t fully melt down.

Who makes candy popcorn?

Candy Pop brand makes a wide variety of chocolate and candy popcorn flavors, such as Butterfinger popcorn, m&m popcorn, Oreo popcorn, and more. Other popular candy popcorn brands include Popcornopolis, Boomchickapop, and Popcorn Indiana.
