Almost EVERY ingredient at Chipotle is gluten-free (cue the confetti!), though cross-contact is still an important factor to navigate.

According to Chipotle’s allergen guide, the only menu item that isn’t gluten-free is the flour tortillas. While that means burritos and quesadillas are off the table, that still leaves so many options to work with, like burrito bowls and salads!

How to Order Gluten-Free at Chipotle

Since all of the meat and toppings are gluten-free, the biggest thing to keep in mind when ordering at Chipotle is avoiding cross-contact from the flour tortillas. Here are a few steps that can help:

  • Ask staff to change their gloves before handling your order
  • Ask that fresh serving utensils be used when making your food
  • Ask that ingredients come from new tubs, if possible (not all locations can always provide this extra step, but it’s definitely worth asking!)
  • Go at less busy times (I try to avoid times when the line is to the door and staff are rushing around trying to serve everyone as quickly as possible)
  • Consider Chipotle’s corn warning before ordering corn-based items*

*From Chipotle’s official gluten-intolerance statement: “If you avoid gluten, don’t eat our flour tortillas. If you are highly sensitive to gluten and would like us to change our gloves, just let us know at the start of your order. You should be aware items containing corn, including corn tortillas (chips and crispy corn tortillas) and corn salsa, may have trace amounts of gluten from potentially co-mingling with gluten-containing grains in the field.”

My Favorite Gluten-Free Meals at Chipotle

  • Salad with steak, fajita veggies, fresh tomato salsa, and chipotle-honey vinaigrette
  • Tacos (crispy corn tortillas), beef barbacoa, pinto beans, shredded cheese, and sour cream
  • Burrito bowl, grilled chicken or carnitas (depending on my mood), white rice, black beans (but sometimes I skip them), fresh tomato salsa, and guacamole
  • Chips & Queso (this side is a must every time!)

Can Kids Eat Gluten-Free at Chipotle?

I’m not the only one in our family who needs gluten-free. Two of my kids do also! At Chipotle, you can get the Kid’s Build Your Own meal with two crispy corn tortillas.

From there you choose a protein or a veggie, plus two toppings and they serve it all in a tray with separate compartments so that the kids can put their own tacos together. It also comes with kid’s chips or kid’s fruit and a drink!

Can People with Celiac Disease Eat at Chipotle?

Most of Chipotle’s current offerings are gluten-free. However, for those with Celiac or severe allergies, cross-contact is still something to consider. I have Celiac and feel comfortable eating at Chipotle when I take extra precautions when ordering.

personally eat Chipotle’s corn-based products despite the warning about potential co-mingling with gluten during growing and harvesting, but whether you’re comfortable eating those items is a personal decision based on your level of sensitivity and doctor’s guidance.

Overall, as someone with Celiac, I find Chipotle offers a lot of gluten-free options I not only enjoy, but feel safe ordering. I love that there are so many gluten-free proteins and toppings to choose from, with plenty of flavorful combinations to create!
